So what is hair transplant? This is a kind of surgery which moves the hair one already has to fill an area with thinning hair or none. Transplants are common and have been done for decades since the 1950s. The only thing tat had changed over time are techniques used, which nowadays vary with a variety of techniques available for potential candidates for transplant to choose from. The surgery is done by an expert and the first step to a hair transplant is an assessment of an individual who can be considered for a transplant. The person who can be the right candidate for a hair transplant varies on various factors such as age, extent of baldness and costs among others.A hair loss patient, therefore, has to confirm from his/her doctor whether he/she qualifies for a hair transplant. In case one doesn’t qualify, there are other hair restoration options that can be exploited by these patients.

During the hair transplant, the performing surgeon begins the procedure by cleaning the scalp and injecting medicine for numbing the back of the head. The doctor can then choose between two methods; Follicular Unit Strip surgery (FUSS) or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).When undergoing FUSS, 6 to 10-inch skin strip is removed from the back of the head by the surgeon. The removed strip of a strip of skin is set aside and the scalp sewn to close it. The sewn area is then instantly concealed by hair. The strip is then divided into 500 to 2000 small grafts with each of the grafts having an individual hair or a few hairs. The number or grafts or the type of graft to be used depends on the type, colour and quality of hair and the size of the area for which the patient is supposed to get the hair transplant. In a case of an FUE type of surgery, the surgeon and his team shave the back of the scalp of the patient. The hair follicles are then removed one after the other from the back of the scalp. The area then heals and is covered with the existing hair.

At this point, the rest of the two procedures are less the same. As the grafts get prepared, the area where the hair is supposed to go is cleaned and numbed by the surgeon. Using a needle or scalpel, slits or holes are created and individual grafts placed into each of the holes. The process can take between 4 to 8 hours depending on the size of the transplant. Another transplant would be needed later if the first one does not produce good results.

After the procedure, the scalp may seem to be tender and one may need to take some pain relievers for a few days. The scalp will also have to be covered with a bandage for a day or two.Antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed by the surgeon to be taken for several days. After the surgery, the patients can go back to their normal chores and works a day to 5 days after the procedure. Falling out of hair may be experienced by the patients within the closet of the first 3 weeks but with a regrowth experienced within a few months. About 60 percent of the new hair growth will be realized between 6 to 9 months. There are some surgeons who prescribe minoxidil, a drug known for improvement of hair growth.

Costs and risks of treatment
The cost of hair transplant largely relies on the amount of hair or grafts involved in the transplant but generally the surgery ranges between Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 100000. The per graft cost which most of the clinics in Hyderabad offer is somewhere around Rs. 25/-  to  Rs. 35/- which is much lesser than what the clinics in other cities offer. Hair transplants are mostly not covered by insurance. Some of the risks involved include infection and bleeding. Scarring and development of unnatural looks due to a receding hairline may also be a problem. A successful transplant performed by a good doctor will often present very little or no complications with a contrast of the same presenting myriad of challenges. Hair transplant is, therefore, a procedure that requires extensive consultations before settling in a specific type of transplant and a doctor. So is advisable to consult a well-qualified doctor and get the surgery done under such a skilled surgeon.
